Understanding Spiritual Gifts

Understanding Spiritual Gifts

“Since you are eager for gifts of the Spirit, try to excel in those that build up the church” (1 Corinthians 14:12).

Some of the gifts of the Spirit are also commands given to all believers. For example, every believer must tithe, and yet, giving is listed as a gift of the Spirit. We are called to be witnesses for Christ, and yet, evangelism is listed as a gift of the Spirit. There are certain people who have been given an extra measure of certain gifts to serve to build up the body of Christ.

As we discuss spiritual gifts, we must also be aware of counterfeit gifts. Jesus said in Matthew 24:24, “For false messiahs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect.”

Satan is a supernatural being with supernatural power, and he uses that power to deceive. In the last days, Satan and the Antichrist will try to deceive the elect. But, do not fear, the Lord will give you discernment to stand against this deceit.

If you don’t know your spiritual gifts, you may want to take a spiritual gifts test. Once you have discovered your gifts, ask the Lord to guide you in using them to build up the body. Using your gifts will fill you with great joy as you see the Lord work in ways you never anticipated.

Prayer: Father, guide me as I seek to discover my spiritual gifts. Help me also to be on guard against counterfeit gifts as the end draws near. May I hold fast to Your Word. I pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.

Elements of the Spirit’s Work

Elements of the Spirit’s Work

There is only one true source of power in this world—Jesus Christ. It is His life within us through the presence of the Holy Spirit that provides the power we need for daily living. On the day that the Holy Spirit was poured out on the Church, Peter delivered one of the most powerful sermons ever preached. Peter’s sermon reveals four elements of the Holy Spirit’s work. These elements are at work within both the Church body and the lives of individuals.

Confrontation of Skepticism—The Holy Spirit compels us to confront our own fears and doubts that keep us from stepping out in faith. The Holy Spirit confronts us with our sin and our attempts to justify sin.

Clarification of Scriptures—Jesus described the Holy Spirit as the “Spirit of truth.” He said, “[H]e will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. He will glorify me because it is from me that he will receive what he will make known to you” (John 16:13-14).

Condemnation of Evil—The Holy Spirit does not condemn us (see Romans 8:1). Rather, He convicts us of wrongdoing. He teaches us how to discern behavior and how to judge character. The Holy Spirit always stands against evil, condemning its influence in our lives.

Confirmation of What Is Good, Right, and True—The Holy Spirit works in us to confirm in our hearts all that is pleasing to God. He confirms His character in us: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. The Holy Spirit teaches us what we must do to overcome greed, sloth, addictions, lust, prejudice, hatred, and anger.
Prayer: God, thank You for giving us Your Spirit to confront us, to clarify Scripture, to condemn evil, and to confirm what is good, right, and true. I pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.

“But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you” (John 14:26).

Asking for Wisdom

Asking for Wisdom

James 1:5 says, “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.” What a relief! God will not only give us wisdom in our moments of need, He will give it generously.

Many ask for wisdom and direction with the assumption that God is a reluctant giver, but He, more than anyone, wants us to walk in righteousness. The problem is that many who ask for God’s wisdom are not willing to obey it. Often we ask God for the answer to our problem or situation, only to ignore Him when He actually responds. But we cannot pick and choose when to obey God and when to go our own way. Having a divided heart—or double-mindedness—is something for which Scripture offers a solution: “Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded” (James 4:8).

A man can go his whole life living by worldly wisdom only to become a sudden prayer warrior when he gets cornered. However, God’s wisdom is not like a bolt of lightning—it’s the kind of wisdom that grows in your spirit on a daily basis as you feed yourself on the Word of God, drawing near to Him. The wisdom of God is not something we can take from God and then leave. It is cultivated through a living relationship with Christ.

Receiving wisdom is simple: You ask for it; God gives it to you; and then you practice it. You ask for it. He gives it to you. You practice it. And before you know it, you are living by God’s wisdom, not the world’s wisdom. Instead of waiting to seek God’s wisdom when the next crisis comes, commit to seeking His wisdom every day.

Prayer: Lord, give me Your wisdom. I know You are a generous God, and here I am, ready to obey. May Your Spirit make my heart willing to follow You at all times so that I might practice Your wisdom throughout my life. I pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.
